# Is Outlier legit?

A plain answer first, then the evidence: who runs Outlier, what it pays, how you get paid and what goes wrong.

## The short answer

**Verdict: Legit, with caveats.** Yes, it is a real platform run by Scale AI and it pays weekly. The caveats: Scale agreed a $12.5 million settlement of a California contractor misclassification case, which it denies (final approval status unconfirmed as of 8 November 2026), and some reviewers report sudden deactivations, unpaid onboarding and gaps between projects ([Glassdoor, June 2026](https://www.glassdoor.com/Reviews/Employee-Review-Outlier-AI-E2858115-RVW104273686.htm); [Trustpilot, 4 Nov 2026](https://nl-be.trustpilot.com/reviews/6aeb60e8864f674cbd8c23ed); [Trustpilot, 4 Nov 2026](https://www.trustpilot.com/reviews/6aeb993d6e41ba4ca283ca46)).

## Who runs Outlier

Outlier says on its FAQ that it is "a platform operated by Scale AI", one of the best known AI data companies. Its terms of use name two companies you contract with: Scale AI, Inc. and Smart Ecosystem Inc., which does business as Outlier AI. In June 2025 Meta took a 49% non-voting stake in Scale AI.

Scale AI also runs Remotasks, an older tasking site. Remotasks is still online, but it closed in Kenya, Nigeria and Pakistan in 2024 and paused new sign-ups in several other countries. Wikipedia describes Outlier as the Scale AI arm for chatbot and language model work, and Remotasks as its arm for image, video and self-driving data.

## What Outlier pays

Outlier does not publish one rate card. Its FAQ says "rates vary by expertise, project complexity, and location", and you see the rate for a project before you start it. Its own pages do give examples. When we checked on 8 November 2026:

- Its [About page](https://outlier.ai/about-us) listed biology experts at up to $50 an hour, graphic design at up to $40, coding at up to $27.50 and English writing at up to $15, all remote, with no country stated.
- Its [OpenClaw Agent Builder](https://outlier.ai/coding/oc-hcc-3r9p) role paid up to $50 an hour, open in Australia, Canada, Finland, France, Italy, Norway, the UK and the US.
- Its [coding page for India](https://outlier.ai/coding/code-quality/en-in) said up to $27.50 an hour, paid weekly, with lower rates during onboarding, and that most experts spend 5 to 10 hours a week on the platform.

These are ceilings for particular roles and countries. They are not what a typical worker earns, and your own rate depends on the project. Figures on third-party job boards that we could not confirm on Outlier's own site are left out.

## Who can join

According to the FAQ you need:

- At least an associate degree. Some projects ask for a bachelor's, master's or PhD.
- A valid ID and a mobile phone from your country of residence.
- A visa that lets you work, if you are not a citizen.
- A current resume and LinkedIn profile, then an identity check and skill screenings.

Outlier does not publish a list of countries.

## How you get paid

Outlier pays weekly. Work from Tuesday to Monday (midnight UTC) is paid the following Tuesday by PayPal, Airtm or ACH bank transfer. Its terms let it delay or hold a payment while it investigates a problem with your work.

## What workers complain about

These are individual reviews, picked to show what the complaints look like. They are not a survey and do not show how often each problem happens.

- **Sudden deactivations.** Some reviewers report accounts closed without a clear reason: "Deactivated without warning after being invited to a better project" ([Glassdoor, June 2026](https://www.glassdoor.com/Reviews/Employee-Review-Outlier-AI-E2858115-RVW104273686.htm)), "Opaque deactivations, automated support" ([Glassdoor, April 2026](https://www.glassdoor.com/Reviews/Employee-Review-Outlier-AI-E2858115-RVW103642522.htm)), and a ban, reinstatement, then onboarding that "disappeared" ([Trustpilot, 4 November 2026](https://nl-be.trustpilot.com/reviews/6aeb61d03f67a926e9b9b807)).
- **Unpaid onboarding.** One reviewer, writing in Spanish, says they lost hours working for free before their account was suspended ([Trustpilot, 4 November 2026](https://nl-be.trustpilot.com/reviews/6aeb60e8864f674cbd8c23ed)).
- **Gaps in work.** One reviewer describes "inconsistent task availability and a temporary account review that paused my access to work" ([Trustpilot, 4 November 2026](https://www.trustpilot.com/reviews/6aeb993d6e41ba4ca283ca46)).
- **Settlement.** In McKinney v. Scale AI (San Francisco Superior Court), Scale and its co-defendants agreed a $12.5 million settlement for contributors who worked through Scale, Smart Ecosystem or HireArt ([King & Siegel, August 2026](https://www.kingsiegel.com/blog/scale-ai-misclassification-settlement-california-class-action/)). The court gave preliminary approval and set the final approval hearing for 30 October 2026. As of 8 November 2026, the [settlement website](https://www.mckinneyscaleaisettlement.com/faq) still said the court had not yet decided on final approval. A [California PAGA filings list](https://pagasearch.com/case/scale-ai-inc--lwda-cm-1066361-24), posted 2 November, shows documents dated 30 October titled as an order and judgment on the final approval motion; we could not read them, so we do not treat final approval as confirmed. A settlement is not a finding of liability, and the defendants deny violating any laws.
- **Minimum wage claim.** A separate claim filed in January 2025 alleged effective pay below California's minimum wage ([TechCrunch, 9 January 2025](https://techcrunch.com/2025/01/09/scale-ai-hit-by-its-second-employee-wage-lawsuit-in-less-than-a-month)). Scale disputed it. As of 8 November 2026 we could not confirm whether it was folded into the McKinney settlement.

Outlier's terms say you are an independent contractor and that it does not stop you working for other platforms.

## How to apply safely

Go to Outlier's official website and apply there. Do not pay anyone to join, take a test or get tasks, and ignore offers that arrive through personal chat apps. If someone contacts you claiming to recruit for Outlier, check that the email comes from the company's own domain before replying.

Apply on Outlier's official site: https://outlier.ai

## Questions

### Is Outlier a scam?
No. Outlier is run by Scale AI and pays contributors weekly. Scams do copy its name, so only apply through outlier.ai and never pay to join.

### How much does Outlier pay per hour?
It depends on the project, your skills and your country, and Outlier shows the rate before you start. Its own pages showed examples on 8 November 2026 from up to $15 an hour (English writing) to up to $50 an hour (biology, and an agent-builder role in eight countries including the US and UK). These are ceilings, not typical earnings.

### How long does Outlier take to pay?
About a week. Work from Tuesday to Monday is paid the following Tuesday by PayPal, Airtm or ACH bank transfer.

### Is Remotasks the same as Outlier?
They are separate sites run by the same company, Scale AI. Remotasks is still online but has closed or paused sign-ups in several countries.
