# Is DataAnnotation legit?

A plain answer first, then the evidence: who runs DataAnnotation, what it pays, how you get paid and what goes wrong.

Facts checked 8 November 2026. First published 8 November 2026. Canonical: https://bestdataannotationjobs.com/is-dataannotation-legit/

## The short answer

**Verdict: Legit.** Yes. DataAnnotation is the worker platform of Surge AI, a large AI data company, and it publishes its pay tiers on its own FAQ. Some reviewers report empty dashboards or not hearing back ([Trustpilot, 4 Oct 2026](https://www.trustpilot.com/reviews/6ac24004f33e0da0f2ca1656); [Trustpilot, 5 Oct 2026](https://www.trustpilot.com/reviews/6ac3a26502e4a63678d83d7e)). A 2025 proposed class action alleges its workers are misclassified as contractors; as of 8 November 2026 we found no public ruling.

## Who runs DataAnnotation

DataAnnotation does not name its legal company in the text of its website, but its logo file reads "da by Surge", and a 2025 class action brought by its annotators is against Surge AI. Surge AI was founded in 2020 by Edwin Chen in San Francisco. In July 2025 PYMNTS, citing Reuters, reported it was looking to raise up to $1 billion.

Its FAQ says it has "paid hundreds of millions of dollars to contractors since 2020".

## What DataAnnotation pays

DataAnnotation is one of the few platforms that publishes its rates. Its FAQ lists these starting ranges:

- **General:** $25 to $50 an hour, for rating chatbot answers, comparing AI outputs and testing image tools.
- **Multilingual:** $25 to $40 an hour.
- **Coding:** $40 to $150+ an hour.
- **STEM:** $40 to $125+ an hour, for work that needs a master's or PhD.
- **Professional (law, finance, medicine):** $40 to $125+ an hour, for licensed professionals.

It adds that all tiers can earn higher rates for strong work. Older reviews quote $20 an hour for general work; the current FAQ starts at $25.

## Who can join

- Fluent English and reliable internet.
- A bachelor's degree or equivalent real world experience for general work. Higher tiers need advanced degrees or licences.
- A starter assessment, which takes about an hour. Specialist assessments take one to two hours. The FAQ does not say whether assessments are paid. It says you will get an email "within a few days after submission" telling you whether you are approved.
- An ID check through Persona, with a physical government photo ID.

DataAnnotation does not list eligible countries on its site.

## How you get paid

By PayPal. The FAQ says deposits arrive within a few days of requesting them. It also says: "We will never ask for money from you for anything."

## What workers complain about

These are individual reviews, picked to show what the complaints look like. They are not a survey and do not show how often each problem happens.

- **Empty dashboards.** Some reviewers report work disappearing: one says they got "0 communication and an empty board after being accepted and doing the onboarding test" ([Trustpilot, 4 October 2026](https://www.trustpilot.com/reviews/6ac24004f33e0da0f2ca1656)), and a Reddit post is titled "Suddenly lost quals and tasks" ([r/DataAnnotationTech, 22 March 2025](https://www.reddit.com/r/DataAnnotationTech/comments/1jgxcm2/suddenly_lost_quals_and_tasks/)). The FAQ says poor work "may result in loss of access to future projects".
- **Not hearing back.** The FAQ says applicants get an email within a few days of submitting the assessment. One reviewer says: "I applied a few months ago and never heard back" ([Trustpilot, 5 October 2026](https://www.trustpilot.com/reviews/6ac3a26502e4a63678d83d7e)).
- **Lawsuit.** In May 2025 a proposed class action in San Francisco Superior Court ([Clarkson Law Firm, 20 May 2025](https://clarksonlawfirm.com/clarkson-represents-surge-ai-workers-in-labor-law-class-action)) alleged that Surge Labs, which runs DataAnnotation, misclassifies its annotators as contractors and does not pay for training time. These are allegations. As of 8 November 2026 the latest event we could verify was that filing; we found no public ruling or settlement, which does not prove there is none, and no public response from Surge.

DataAnnotation does not publish contractor terms, so we could not check whether it allows you to work for other platforms.

## How to apply safely

Go to DataAnnotation's official website and apply there. Do not pay anyone to join, take a test or get tasks, and ignore offers that arrive through personal chat apps. If someone contacts you claiming to recruit for DataAnnotation, check that the email comes from the company's own domain before replying.
