# AI training jobs for lawyers

AI companies pay lawyers to check and improve their models. Here is where lawyers can apply, what the work is and what it has paid.

## What the work involves

Legal AI training means testing a model's legal reasoning, not advising clients. Mercor's legal listing describes writing a legal problem from a matter you worked on, with the reference answer the model is graded against, and grading model-drafted legal work, including whether each citation supports the point it is used for. It also asks experts to flag where a model states the law correctly but would still lose. Handshake AI's attorney listing describes designing prompts and reviewing AI answers for legal accuracy.

## Where lawyers can apply

- **Mercor, legal expert pool.** A standing talent pool, open when we checked on 8 November 2026. Mercor says it is not a specific job opening and stays open whether or not a matching project is running. Past listings in it have posted $60 to $150 an hour, set per project. [See the pool](https://work.mercor.com/jobs/list_AAABoKOQUds_uf4uJMtGK64s/legal-expert).
- **DataAnnotation, professional tier.** Law, finance and medicine work for licensed professionals, starting at $40 to $125+ an hour. [Read the FAQ](https://www.dataannotation.tech/faqs).
- **Appen (CrowdGen).** Its home page lists legal experts at up to $400 an hour, a ceiling rather than a typical rate. [See CrowdGen](https://crowdgen.com/).
- **Handshake AI.** A US attorney listing paid $90 to $110 an hour. It was closed when we checked.

## What you need to apply

Mercor's legal pool asks for "professional experience in legal practice, compliance, regulatory work, or policy", without naming a degree or bar admission. Handshake's attorney role asked for a JD from an accredited law school, an active or previously active law licence in good standing, and practice experience. DataAnnotation's professional tier asks for licensed credentials.

Mercor's listings say it cannot support US H-1B or STEM OPT candidates.

## What it pays

Published ranges run from $40 an hour (DataAnnotation's starting point) to $150 an hour (top of past listings in Mercor's legal pool). PYMNTS, citing Bloomberg, reported in October 2026 that AI labs offered a civil rights attorney up to $400 an hour. Treat that as the top of the market, not a typical rate.

## Things to know before you start

- This is independent contractor work, with no benefits or guaranteed hours.
- Legal listings can close quickly. Several older Mercor law listings were closed when we checked.
- You are grading and writing training material for an AI company, not representing clients.
- Keep project details confidential. Outlier, Alignerr and Appen all forbid discussing project details in public.
